Si Lauro Zarate Alcala (18 Agosto 1926 - 24 Hunyo 2002) o mas kilala sa tawag na Larry Alcala ay idineklara bilang Pambansang Alagad ng Sining sa larangan ng sining biswal noong 2018. Siya ay isang ilustrador at editorial cartoonist.[1][2]

Unang yugto ng buhay

Isinilang si Lauro Zarate Alcala o Larry Alcala noong 18 Agosto 1926 sa Daraga, Albay. Ang kanyang mga magulang ay sina Ernesto Alcala at Elpidia Zarate.[2]

Edukasyon

Bilang iskolar ng pabliser na si Ramon Roces, natapos ni Larry Alcala ang Bachelor of Fine Arts sa pagpipinta sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas noong 1950.[2]

Propesyon

Mula 1951 hanggang 1981 ay naging guro si Larry Alcala sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas.[2]

Taong 1947 noong ginawa ni Larry Alcala ang kanyang kauna-unahang comic strip na Siopawman na nailimbag sa komiks na Halakhak at ang Kalabog en Bosyo na Taglish ang ginamit na salita ng mga tauhan. Ang Kalabog en Bosyo ang pinakamahabang seryeng kartun na ginawa ng isang Pilipino at ito ay isinapelikula ng Sampaguita Pictures noong 1957.[2]

Pinakasikat sa mga nalikha ni Larry Alcala ay ang Slice of Life na seryeng kartun simula 1980 hanggang 1986 na inilalarawan ang mga katangi-tanging aspekto ng pang-araw-araw na buhay sa Pilipinas.[3] Samantalang ang kanyang comic strip na Mang Ambo naman ay salamin ng isang Pilipino na nananatiling tradisyunal sa kabila ng urbanisasyon na nagaganap sa kanyang paligid.[2] Nagsimula ito noong 1960 sa Weekly Graphic kung saan nagtatrabaho noon si Larry Alcala bilang editorial cartoonist at ilustrador.[4]

Nilikha rin ni Larry Alcala simula 1946 hanggang 1948 ang Islaw Palitaw, simula 1951 hanggang 1965 ang Tipin, simula 1961 hanggang 1972 ang This Business of Living, simula 1964 hanggang 1969 ang Loverboy, simula 1966 hanggang 1972 ang Project 13, Kongressman Kalog na nailathala sa Aliwan Komiks at Kalambogesyons na nailathala sa Pilipino Komiks, simula 1976 hanggang 1984 ang Asiong Aksaya na nailathala sa Daily Express at Tagalog Klasiks, at simula 1981 hanggang 2002 ang Laugh and Live, Life Today.[2][3]
