Ralph Harold Boston (9 Mayıs 1939 – 30 Nisan 2023), Amerikalı siyahi atlet. üç Olimpiyat madalyası alan ve uzun atlamada 27 fit (8,2 m) sınırını aşan ilk sporcu oldu.

Yaşamı ve kariyeri

Boston, 9 Mayıs 1939'da Laurel, Mississippi'de doğdu. Tennessee Eyalet Üniversitesi'nde öğrenciyken ilk önemli başarısını uzun atlamada 1960 Ulusal Kolej Atletizm Birliği şampiyonluğunu elde ederek kazandı. Aynı yılın Ağustos ayında Mt. SAC Bayrak Yarışları'nda Jesse Owens'ın 25 yıldır elinde tuttuğu Dünya rekorunu elde etti. Halihazırda Dünya rekorunun sahibi olan sporcu 27 Mayıs 1961'de düzenlenen Modesto Bayrak Yarışları'nda 27 fit 05 inç (8,36 m) atlayarak 27 fit'i (8,2 m) eski rekorunuda egale etmiştir.[2]

Eğitimi sonrasında profesyonel spor kariyerini 1960-1968 yılları arasında Yaz Olimpiyatları, Ulusal Atletizm Şampiyonası ve Panamerikan Oyunları'nda sürdüren sporcu başarı göstererek altın, gümüş ve bronz olmak üzere beş madalyanın sahibi oldu.[3] Sporu bıraktıktan sonra Knoxville, Tennessee'ye taşınan sporcu 1968'den 1975 yılına kadar Tennessee Üniversitesi'nde Azınlık İşleri Koordinatörü ve Öğrenci Dekan Yardımcısı olarak çalıştı.[4] Ayrıca CBS Spor Gösterimleri'nde yerel atletizm etkinliklerinin saha muhabirliğini yapmıştır. Hizmetleriyle 1974'te ABD Atletizm Şeref Kürsüsü'ne ve 1985'te ABD Olimpiyat Şeref Kürsüsü'ne adı dahil edilmiştir.[5]

Son dönemleri ve ölümü

Kırdığı Dünya rekorunun 50. yılına denk gelen 2 Ağustos 2010'da Los Angeles Times gazetesinde hakkında bir makale yayınladı. Kalan yaşmını Atlanta, Georgia ve Knoxville'de sürdüren[6] Boston, 30 Nisan 2023'te Knoxville, Tennessee'de geçirdiği inme nedeniyle 83 yaşında ölmüştür.[7]
