Struktur kristal heterodimer c-Fos:c-Jun dan kompleks DNA (PDB: 1FOS​). Dalam domain "Leucine Zipper" (abu-abu), residu hidrofobik pada c-Fos dan residu hidrofobik pada c-Jun saling menempel pada antarmuka kumparan melingkar (leusin diwarnai biru, dan residu hidrofobik lainnya diwarnai kuning). Residu dari "wilayah dasar" (ungu) berinteraksi langsung dengan DNA (merah).

Dalam bidang studi genetika, AP-1 (bahasa Inggris: activator protein 1, AP-1) adalah protein di dalam inti sel berbentuk heterodimerik dari kompleks fos dan jun[1] dan subgroup ATF.[2] AP-1 merupakan faktor transkripsi yang memiliki peran penting dalam ekspresi genetik seluler seperti transformasi, proliferasi melalui represi ekspresi gen supresor tumor, diferensiasi, apoptosis, migrasi sel;[3] mengendalikan ekspresi dan fungsi regulator siklus sel seperti siklin D1, supresor tumor p53, p21(cip1/waf1), p19(ARF) dan p16; dan radang.
