Agama Aztek

Agama Aztek adalah agama Mesoamerika yang dianut oleh bangsa Aztek. Seperti agama-agama Mesoamerika lainnya, agama ini mengajarkan praktik pengorbanan manusia yang diadakan sesuai dengan pola dalam kalender Aztek. Teologinya bersifat politeistik yang mengakui keberadaan dewa-dewi. Bangsa Aztek juga sering kali memadukan dewa-dewi dari kawasan lain.

Kosmologi Aztek membagi dunia menjadi tiga belas tingkatan di langit dan sembilan lapisan di bumi atau dunia bawah (langit pertama bertumpangtindih dengan lapisan bumi pertama, langit dan bumi bertemu di permukaan bumi). Masing-masing tingkatan dikaitkan dengan dewa dan objek astronomis tertentu. Benda-benda langit terpenting dalam kepercayaan Aztek adalah Matahari, Bulan dan planet Venus (sebagai "bintang pagi" dan "bintang senja").

Banyak dewa-dewa Aztek yang sebelumnya sudah disembah oleh peradaban-peradaban Mesoamerika lainnya. Dewa-dewa seperti Tlaloc, Quetzalcoatl dan Tezcatlipoca disembah dengan nama-nama yang berbeda dalam sejarah Mesoamerika. Bagi bangsa Aztek, dewa-dewa yang paling penting adalah dewa hujan Tlaloc, dewa Huitzilopochtli yang merupakan pelindung Mexica, dewa takdir dan keberuntungan Tezcatlipoca (yang dikaitkan dengan perang dan sihir), serta Quetzalcoatl sang ular bersayap, dewa angin, dan dewa peradaban dan keteraturan. Masing-masing dewa memiliki altarnya sendiri yang bersandingan di puncak piramida terbesar di ibu kota Aztek, Tenochtitlan.
