Barbeuia madagascariensis adalah liana yang hanya ditemukan di pulau Madagaskar.

Barbeuia terkadang ditempatkan dalam familinya sendiri, Barbeuiaceae. Sebagai contoh, Sistem APG II tahun 2003 mengakui famili tersebut dan memasukkannya ke dalam ordo Caryophyllales dalam klad eudikotil inti, setelah Philippe Cuénoud mengurutkan fragmen gen matK (yang diekstraksi dari biji yang disimpan di Kew Herbarium) dan menunjukkan bahwa Barbeuia tidak termasuk dalam Phytolaccaceae.[2] Hal ini merupakan perubahan dari sistem APG tahun 1998, yang tidak mengakui Barbeuiaceae sebagai famili karena kurangnya data molekuler.
