Eathiestrobus mackenziei adalah fosil kerucut konifer yang ditemukan di Formasi Kimmeridge Clay (Jura Akhir) dekat Eathie, di Black Isle, Skotlandia.[2] Fosil ini merupakan fosil tertua yang diketahui dalam keluarga Pinaceae.[1]

Etimologi

Nama genus Eathiestrobus merujuk pada tempat ditemukannya, yaitu Eathie di Skotlandia, dan strobus yang berarti kerucut. Nama spesies mackenziei diberikan untuk menghormati Bapak W. Mackenzie, yang mengoleksi spesimen tersebut dan mendonasikannya ke Hunterian Museum pada tahun 1896.

Deskripsi

Holotipe dari Eathiestrobus mackenziei terdiri dari kerucut biji yang tidak lengkap sepanjang 8 cm. Spesimen ini disimpan di Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery di Glasgow, dan awalnya diidentifikasi sebagai Pityostrobus, namun kemudian diperiksa ulang dan diklasifikasikan kembali sebagai genus dan spesies baru pada tahun 2012.[1]

Signifikansi

Eathiestrobus memperpanjang catatan fosil keluarga Pinaceae sekitar 20 juta tahun. Fosil Pinaceae tertua yang diketahui sebelumnya berasal dari Kapur Awal (Pinus yorkshirensis dan Pityostrobus californensis). Eathiestrobus juga penting karena memperjelas karakteristik kerucut biji Pinaceae, sehingga memudahkan identifikasi anggota keluarga tersebut dalam catatan fosil.[1]
