Ernest Rutherford, 1st Baron Rutherford of Nelson (30 Agustus 1871 – 19 Oktober 1937) adalah seorang fisikawan kelahiran Selandia Baru yang bekerja sama meneliti atom dengan J.J. Thomson di Universitas Cambridge.
Rutherford berhasil menangkap adanya nukleus di dalam atom. Dengan dukungan dari Frederick Soddy, ia mengemukakan bahwa radioaktivitas berasal dari peluruhan atom-atom. Ia adalah orang pertama yang berhasil melakukan pembelahan atom di dalam laboratorium.
Atas penelitiannya pada berbagai tipe radiasi, ia dinobatkan sebagai peraih hadiah Nobel Kimia pada tahun 1908.
