James Gilmore Backus (25 Februari 1913 – 3 Juli 1989) adalah seorang pemeran berkewarganegaraan Amerika Serikat. Beberapa peran terkenalnya meliputi Thurston Howell III pada sitkom 1960an Gilligan's Island, ayah dari karakter James Dean dalam Rebel Without a Cause,[1] pengisi suara karakter kartun Mr. Magoo,[2][3] Hubert Updike III pada versi radio dari The Alan Young Show, dan suami dari karakter Joan Davis (seorang hakim pengadilan domestik) pada seri televisi I Married Joan. Ia juga tampil dalam acaranya sendiri selama satu musim, The Jim Backus Show, yang juga dikenal sebagai Hot Off the Wire.

Ia masuk dalam Hollywood Walk of Fame pada 1960.[4]
