Mata majemuk pada artropoda terdiri dari ribuan omatidia, yaitu reseptor penglihatan yang terpisah.[1] Seluruh pandangan yang didapati merupakan gabungan masukan dari omatidia yang terletak di permukaan konveks, yang tertuju ke arah yang berbeda-beda.

Dibandingkan dengan mata biasa, mata majemuk dapat menangkap gambar dalam sudut yang sangat lebar, dan dapat mendeteksi gerakan cepat, dan dalam beberapa kasus dapat melihat polarisasi cahaya.[2] Karena lensa individual sangat kecil, efek difraksi membatasi resolusi yang didapat. Hal ini dapat di atasi dengan meningkatkan jumlah dan ukuran lensa.

Mata majemuk dapat digolongkan menjadi dua grup: mata oposisi, yang membentuk beberapa gambar terbalik, dan mata superposisi, yang membentuk bayangan tegak tunggal.[3] Mata majemuk umumnya terdapat pada artropoda, dan juga terdapat pada anelida dan beberapa moluska bivalvia.[4]

Mata majemuk pada artropoda dapat tumbuh dengan penambahan omatidia baru.[5]
