Mayaca adalah sebuah genus tumbuhan berbunga, yang sering ditempatkan dalam familinya sendiri, yaitu Mayacaceae (atau Mayaceae dalam sistem yang lebih lama).[4][5] Dalam sistem APG II tahun 2003, genus ini dimasukkan ke dalam ordo Poales dalam klad komelinid. Sistem Cronquist, tahun 1981, juga mengakui famili tersebut dan menempatkannya dalam ordo Commelinales dalam subkelas Commelinidae.

Kelompok ini tersebar luas di Amerika Latin mulai dari Meksiko hingga Argentina, serta di Hindia Barat, tenggara Amerika Serikat, dan Afrika bagian tengah.[3][6][7][8]

Spesies

Sekitar delapan belas nama spesies telah diusulkan,[9] namun hanya 5 yang diterima sebagai spesies yang berbeda.[10]
