Mesohil

Mesohil, sebelumnya dikenal sebagai mesenkim atau sebagai mesoglea, adalah matriks agar-agar dalam spons. Matriks ini mengisi ruang antara pinacoderm eksternal dan choanoderm internal. Mesohil menyerupai jenis jaringan ikat dan mengandung beberapa sel amoeboid seperti amebosit, serta fibril dan elemen kerangka. Untuk waktu yang lama, telah banyak diterima bahwa spons tidak memiliki jaringan yang sebenarnya, tetapi saat ini diperdebatkan apakah lapisan mesohil atau pinacoderm adalah bagian dari jaringan spons.

Mesohil terdiri dari unsur-unsur utama sebagai berikut: kolagen, molekul yang mirip fibronektin, galektin, dan komponen minor, dermatopontin. Polipeptida ini membentuk matriks ekstraseluler yang menyediakan platform untuk adhesi sel spesifik serta untuk transduksi sinyal dan pertumbuhan sel.

Mesohil termasuk mesoglea koloid non selular dengan serat kolagen yang tertanam, spikula dan berbagai sel, yang merupakan jenis mesenkim.[1]
