Ostariophysi merupakan superordo ikan bersirip kipas dengan jumlah anggota terbesar kedua. Karakter utama dari kelompok ini adalah terdapatnya modifikasi pada tulang punggung pada bagian depan yang berfungsi dalam pendengaran yang disebut sebagai organ Weber. Selain itu, sebagian besar dari anggota kelompok ini dapat menghasilkan feromon pada sel kulit yang dilepaskan ketika terluka dan memicu reaksi waspada pada ikan lain di sekitarnya.[1]
