Protorothyris adalah sebuah genus punah dari zaman Cisuralium yang berasal dari Texas dan Virginia Barat di Amerika Serikat. Genus tersebut mula-mula dinamai oleh Llewellyn Ivor Price pada 1937 dan spesies tipenya adalah Protorothyris archeri. P. archeri diketahui dari holotipe MCZ 1532, sebuah tengkorak 3 dimensi yang diawetkan dan dari spesimen-spesimen yang dirujuk, yang datang dari empat individu tambahan, MCZ 2147-2150. Semua spesimen dikumpulkan di situs Cottonwood Creek, dari Formasi Archer City, Texas, berasal dari tahap Asselian dari kala Cisuralian, sekitar 299–294.6 juta tahun yang lalu.[1] Spesies kedua, P. morani, pertama dinamai oleh Alfred Sherwood Romer pada 1952 dengan nama generik Melanothyris.[2] Pada 1973, J. Clark and Robert L. Carroll menggabungkan kembali P. morani sebagai spesies Protorothyris. Spesies tersebut diketahui dari holotipe CM 8617, sebuah tengkorak yang diawetkan dalam bentuk tiga dimensi. Fosil tersebut dikumpulkan di situs Blacksville, sari Formasi Washington (tahap Asselian) dari Virginia Barat.[3]Protorothyris rata-rata memiliki ukuran sebesar kadal, yakni sekitar 30 cm.[4]
