Stelis adalah genus anggrek yang besar, dengan 1339 spesies yang diterima.[1] Namanya adalah kata Yunani untuk "kapasilan", mengacu pada kebiasaan epifit spesiesnya. Tumbuhan yang sebagian besar bersifat epifit (jarang litofit) ini tersebar luas di sebagian besar Amerika Selatan, Amerika Tengah, Meksiko, Hindia Barat, dan Florida.[2] Stelis disingkat Ste. dalam perdagangan hortikultura.[3]

Banyak spesiesnya yang lebih tua diberi nama oleh Lindley, Ruiz & Pavon, serta Reichenbach, sementara banyak spesies yang lebih baru diberi nama oleh Carlyle A. Luer. Anggrek dari genus ini mungkin merupakan anggrek Amerika pertama yang dibawa ke Eropa. Sebuah spesimen herbarium digambarkan pada tahun 1591 dalam buku herbal Tabernaemontanus.
