Wayland adalah protokol komunikasi yang menentukan komunikasi antara peladen layar dengan kliennya, juga merupakan implementasi pustaka C dari protokol tersebut. Sebuah peladen layar yang menggunakan protokol Wayland disebut pengomposisi Wayland, karena peladen layar tersebut juga melakukan tugas sistem penjendelaan pengomposisian.

Wayland dikembangkan oleh kelompok sukarelawan yang awalnya dipimpin oleh Kristian Høgsberg sebagai proyek komunitas perangkat lunak bebas dan sumber terbuka dengan tujuan menggantikan X Window System dengan sistem penjendelaan yang modern, aman, dan simpel pada Linux dan sistem operasi mirip Unix lainnya. Kode sumber Wayland dirils di bawah Lisensi MIT, sebuah lisensi perangkat lunak bebas yang permisif.

Sebagai bagian dari usaha pengembangannya, proyek Wayland juga mengembangkan referensi implementasi dari pengomposisi Wayland yang dinamakan Weston.
