Protein kodiran ovim genom pripada porodici STEAP (eng. skr. od šestotransmembranski epitelni antigenprostate), a nalazi se u Golgijevom aparatu. Funkcionira kao metaloreduktaza koja ima sposobnost redukcije i Fe (3+) na Fe (2+) i Cu (2+) na Cu (1+), koristeći NAD (+) kao akceptor. Studije na miševima i ljudima ukazuju da ovaj gen može biti uključen u razvoj adipocita i metabolizam, te može pridonijeti normalnoj biologiji ćelija prostate, kao i progresiji kancera. Za ovaj gen pronađene su alternativno prerađene varijante transkripta koje kodiraju različite izoforme.
