Das AFI Fest geht auf das 1971 gegründete FILMEX für internationale Filme zurück. Nachdem API das Festival übernommen hatte, wurde es neu strukturiert, neu aufgestellt und 1987 als API Fest neu gestartet. Es wurde zunächst im Frühjahr in Santa Monica durchgeführt, zog dann nach West Hollywood, wo es im Sommer stattfand, bevor es nach Hollywood als Herbstfestival zog.[1] Das Festival erhebt den Anspruch Filme von Weltformat zu zeigen. Es werden sowohl Spielfilme, als auch Dokumentarfilme in Spielfilmlänge, sowie Dokumentarkurzfilme und Kurzfilme gezeigt. Begleitet wird das Festival mit Podiumsdiskussionen mit Filmemachern.[2] Das Festival findet inzwischen Ende Oktober statt und schließt üblicherweise die Herbstsaison der großstädtischen Filmfestivals ab.[3]

AFI Fest ist ein von der Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences anerkanntes Filmfestival, hier mit der Großen Auszeichnung der Jury ausgezeichnete Kurzfilme qualifizieren sich für Oscarnominierungen in den Sparten Kurzfilm, animierter Kurzfilm und Dokumentarfilm-Kurzfilm. Das Filmfestival ist auch von der British Academy of Film and Television Arts für die Qualifizierung von Kurzfilmen für die British Academy Film Awards anerkannt.[4]
