Adam Kuper (* 29. Dezember 1941 in Johannesburg) ist ein britischer Ethnologe und Hochschullehrer.^[1]

Der in Südafrika geborene Adam Kuper studierte zunächst Ethnologie an der Witwatersrand-Universität und legte dort 1961 die Bachelorprüfung ab. Seine Promotion zum Ph.D. erfolgte 1966 an der University of Cambridge. Für die Arbeit an seiner Dissertation führte er zwischen 1963 und 1967 ethnologische Feldforschungen in Botswana durch. Später forschte er in Jamaika (1972/73) und auf Mauritius (1983/84). Von 1967 bis 1970 arbeitete er als Hochschullehrer an der Makere-Universität in Uganda und bis 1976 am University College London. Von 1976 bis 1985 war er Professor für "African Anthropology" an der Universität Leiden. Von 1986 bis zu seiner Emeritierung 2008 hatte er eine Professur an der Brunel University inne. Im Jahre 1993 wurde er Mitglied der Academia Europaea und 2000 wurde er in die British Academy^[2] berufen. Gastprofessuren hatte er an der Boston University (2013/14) und seit 2013/14 an der London School of Economics inne. Neben seinen Arbeiten über Afrika beschäftigt sich Adam Kuper auch mit der Geschichte der Ethnologie, insbesondere in Großbritannien. In seinem letzten Buch behandelt er die Geschichte der ethnologischen Museen.^[3]

Adam Kuper ist ein Cousin von Leo Kuper und seiner Frau Hilda Kuper.
