Aghada (irisch Áth Fhada, Bedeutung: lange Furt)[2] ist ein Ort im County Cork in Irland. Gemeinsam mit den Ortschaften Farsid und Rostellan bildet die Ortschaft eine statistische Einheit und hat 1159 Einwohner (2022).[1]

Geografie

Aghada liegt etwa 15 Kilometer ostsüdöstlich von Cork am Cork Harbour. Entlang der Küste führt die R630 von Midleton kommend nach Whitegate und weiter nach Gyleen. Im Westen der Ortschaft an der Küste liegt das Anfang der 1980er Jahre errichtete Kraftwerk Aghada, das leistungsfähigste Kraftwerk (Gaskraftwerk) mit 577 MW auf der irischen Insel.

Geschichte

Am 17. Februar 1873 sank vor der Küste von Aghada das britische Schiff Coronation. Während des Ersten Weltkriegs befand sich hier die Garnison der Reserve der Royal Munster Fusiliers. Von 1918 bis 1919 befand sich hier die U.S. Naval Air Station Queenstown Ireland der Flieger der US-Marine.
