Alya Sebti (* 1983 in Casablanca) ist eine marokkanische Kuratorin und Kunsthistorikerin im Bereich der zeitgenössischen Kunst.[1][2] Sie leitet die ifa-Galerie Berlin und wurde durch ihre kuratorischen Arbeiten für internationale Biennalen in Marrakesch, Dakar, Marseille und São Paulo bekannt.[1][3]

Leben

Sebti wurde 1983 in Casablanca geboren, absolvierte ihre kunsthistorische Ausbildung in Paris und lebt seit 2014 in Berlin.[4][5] Seit 2010 arbeitete sie als unabhängige Kuratorin und Autorin; zum 1. April 2016 übernahm sie die Leitung der ifa-Galerie Berlin.[2] Von 2012 bis 2018 war sie Vorstandsmitglied der International Biennial Association.[4] Die Kunstzeitschrift Apollo zählte sie 2020 in ihrer Reihe 40 Under 40 Africa zur Gruppe der „Denker“.[6]

Wirken

Sebtis kuratorisches Wirken interpretiert das Biennaleformat als Begegnungsraum und schafft postkoloniale, diasporische und relationale Perspektiven.[1][4] Als künstlerische Leiterin der fünften Marrakesch-Biennale 2014 rahmte sie die Ausgabe unter dem Titel Wo sind wir jetzt?, die Beiträge aus bildender Kunst, Literatur, Film und Performance umfasste.[7] Zu ihren ersten kuratorischen Projekten gehörten Carrefour/Treffpunkt in den ifa-Galerien, Casablanca, energie noire im Rahmen von Mons 2015 und Now Eat My Script am KW Institute for Contemporary Art Berlin.[2] An der ifa-Galerie entwickelte sie ab 2017 Untie to Tie, eine Forschungs- und Ausstellungsplattform zu kolonialen Nachwirkungen in zeitgenössischen Gesellschaften.[1][6] Bei der dreizehnten Dak’Art 2018 gehörte Sebti zu fünf Gastkuratoren und kuratierte die Ausstellung Invisible, die Rituale und unsichtbare Wissensformen in den Mittelpunkt stellte.[8] Für Manifesta 13 Marseille bildete sie mit Katerina Chuchalina und Stefan Kalmár das künstlerische Team der Ausstellung Traits d’union.s.[9] Die Arbeit an Manifesta 13 fiel in die Covid-19-Pandemie, während der Sebti die Fortführung der Biennale als Anlass beschrieb, das Format als Experiment zu denken.[10] 2025 gehörte sie zum kuratorischen Konzeptteam der 36. Bienal de São Paulo, die unter der Leitung von Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung unter dem Titel Not All Travellers Walk Roads – Of Humanity as Practice stand.[3][5]
