Axial Seamount​

Der Axial Seamount ist ein unterseeischer Schildvulkan, der mittig auf dem Juan-de-Fuca-Rücken liegt, ungefähr 470 km von der amerikanischen Westküste (Oregon) entfernt. Die höchste Stelle des Vulkans befindet sich 1410 m unter dem Meeresspiegel. Zusätzlich zu seiner Position auf einem ozeanischen Rücken liegt er gleichzeitig noch über einem Hot Spot, was für hohe Aktivität sorgt. Ausbrüche wurden 1998, 2011 und 2015 beobachtet.[1][2][3] Der Axial Seamount war die Stelle, an der 1983 zum ersten Mal schwarze Raucher entdeckt wurden. Da der Vulkan von einem dichten Netz aus Seismographen und Tiefenmessgeraeten überzogen ist, konnte hier 2010 zum ersten Mal das Heben und Senken von Ozeanböden mit guter Genauigkeit live beobachtet werden.[4]
