Batmobile ist eine niederländische Psychobilly-Band aus Breda und Rotterdam.

Bandgeschichte

Batmobile wurde 1983 von Jeroen Haamers (Gesang, Gitarre), Johnny Zuidhof (Schlagzeug) und Eric Haamers (Kontrabass) gegründet und gehört zu den bekanntesten und einflussreichsten Bands des Genres.[1]

Nach ersten Auftritten mit Rockabilly-Covern begann die Band, eigenes Material zu schreiben; 1985 erschien die selbstbetitelte Debüt-EP beim niederländischen Label Kix 4 U und machte Batmobile in der europäischen Szene bekannt.[2]

Ein frühes Karrierehighlight war 1986 ein Auftritt im Londoner Klub Foot; Batmobile werden in der Szenechronik als erste nicht-britische Band genannt, die dort headlinte und damit eine Brücke zwischen dem kontinentaleuropäischen Psychobilly und der UK-Szene schlug.[3] Das erste Studioalbum „Bambooland“ (1987) erschien bei Count Orlok Music und festigte den Status der Band als europäische Psychobilly-Speerspitze. Es folgten u. a. „Bail Was Set at $6,000,000“ (1988, Nervous Records), „Amazons from Outer Space“ (1989), „Sex Starved“ (1991) sowie Kompilationen und Live-Veröffentlichungen. Parallel tourte das Trio intensiv in Europa und darüber hinaus.[4]

In den späten 1990er-Jahren kündigte die Band an, ihr Repertoire um eine eigene, von B-Movies und Humor geprägte „B-Music“-Spielart des Rock ’n’ Roll zu erweitern. Zum 25-jährigen Bandjubiläum entstand mit den Landsleuten Peter Pan Speedrock das Split-Album „Cross Contamination“ (2008), auf dem beide Gruppen einander covern. Nach längerer Album-Pause kehrte die Band 2017 mit „Brand New Blisters“ (Butler Records) zu einem vollwertigen Studioalbum zurück.
