Birse, schottisch-gälisch Braois[1], ist ein Weiler in der schottischen Council Area Aberdeenshire. Sie ist Hauptort des gleichnamigen Civil Parishs. Er liegt etwa drei Kilometer südöstlich von Aboyne und 40 Kilometer südwestlich des Zentrums von Aberdeen nahe dem rechten Ufer des Dee.[2][3]

Geschichte

Die Bezeichnung Birse könnte sich von dem gälischen Ausdruck für „Busch“ ableiten und auf den vorherrschenden Bewuchs der Region hinweisen.[1][4] Der Forest of Birse war einst königlicher Jagdforst. Als Jagdsitz ließen die Herren von Cluny Castle dort das gegen Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts das Tower House Birse Castle errichten.[5] Die Birse and Feughside Parish Church wurde 1779 als Pfarrkirche errichtet.[6]

Verkehr

Die B976 erschließt Birse. Sie bindet die Ortschaft an die durch Aboyne verlaufende A93 (Perth–Aberdeen) an.[3]
