Cronius ist eine Gattung der Schwimmkrabben mit einer rezenten – Cronius ruber (Lamarck, 1818) – und einer fossilen Art – Cronius obscurus Rathbun, 1945 †.[1] Die rezente Art besiedelt die Gezeitenzone und den Schelf zwischen 0 und 18 m in der gemäßigten Klimazone des Nordatlantiks, im tropischen Atlantik vor den Kanaren und Madeira sowie im tropischen Ostpazifik.[2]

Merkmale

Der Carapax ist bis zu 63 mm lang und queroval. Der vordere Seitenrand ist mit neun Zähnen mit wechselnder Größe sowie zusätzlichen kleinen Zähnchen hinter dem ersten, zweiten und manchmal dritten bewehrt. Die Außenseite des Carpus des Scherenbeins ist mit drei Dornen besetzt.[2]
