Great Ayton ist ein Dorf und Civil Parish in North Yorkshire in England. Der Civil Parish hat 4318 Einwohner (Stand 2024) und eine Fläche von ca. 25,88 km².[1][2]

Geschichte

Great Ayton wurde im Jahr 1086 erstmalig durch das Domesday Book erwähnt. Dieses lässt in dem Zusammenhang in Great Ayton eine Kirche aus Holz und Stein im angelsächsischen Stil vermuten, die der heutigen All Saints Church vorausging.[3]

Ab dem 18. Jahrhundert wurde Great Ayton zu einem Handwerkerdorf mit Fokus auf Weberei, Gerberei, Brauerei und Fliesen- und Ziegelherstellung.[4] Auch über eine Ölmühle und eine Getreidemühle verfügte Great Ayton.[5][6] Im 19. Jahrhundert kam durch die Eisenbahnanbindung außerdem der Bergbau hinzu, da es in der Umgebung Vorkommen von Eisenerz, Gagat und Alaune gab. Auch Gestein zum Bau von Straßenoberflächen (engl. Whinstone) wurde abgebaut.[7][8]

Von 1974 bis 2023 war Great Ayton Teil des Hambleton District, der am 1. April 2023 aufgelöst worden und in den North Yorkshire Council übergegangen ist, welchem Great Ayton seitdem angehört.

Geographie

Durch Great Ayton fließt der Fluss Leven, ein Nebenfluss des Fluss Tees.

Great Ayton befindet sich am Fuß der Cleveland Hills unterhalb des Easby Moor. Auch der Berg Roseberry Topping liegt direkt oberhalb von Great Ayton. Der Cleveland Dyke, ein ungefähr 50 Kilometer langes Band aus vulkanischem Gestein, verläuft nordöstlich von Great Ayton.[9]

Verkehr

Great Ayton liegt an der Esk Valley Line und wird über diese mit Zugverbindungen an Whitby und Middlesbrough angebunden.
