Sportlicher Werdegang

New rückte Ende der 1950er Jahre zunächst als Linienrichter in den Kreis der Spieloffiziellen der First Division, ehe er später selbst als Hauptschiedsrichter agierte. Bis 1975 pfiff er Spiele in der höchsten englischen Spielklasse.

New kam 1968 die Ehre zuteil, das Spiel um den Charity Shield zwischen Meister Manchester City und dem Pokalsieger West Bromwich Albion zu leiten, in dem die „Sky blues“ im heimischen Stadion Maine Road den Gegner mit einem 6:1-Erfolg deklassierten. Fünf Jahre später pfiff er das Finalspiel um den FA Amateur Cup zwischen dem siegreichen Walton & Hersham und Slough Town im Wembley-Stadion. Bereits im Wettbewerb um den FA Cup 1960/61 war er am Finalspiel als Linienrichter von Hauptschiedsrichter Jack Kelly im Wembley-Stadion beteiligt gewesen.
