Heptadecan ist ein langkettiges, lineares Alkan. Es kommt in Erdöl vor sowie in daraus hergestellten Produkten wie Heizöl und Schmieröl.

Vorkommen

Kaffeekirschenkäfer

Heptadecan ist Bestandteil von Erdöl.[3]

Heptadecan kommt in den Ausscheidungen des Kaffeekirschenkäfers (Hypothenemus hampei) vor und wirkt als Kairomon, das den Parasiten Prorops nasuta (Ordnung Hautflügler) anlockt.[4] Heptadecan wurde außerdem als Hauptkomponente des Sexualpheromons der Trauermücke Lycoriella ingenua postuliert, was jedoch später widerlegt wurde. In einer neueren Untersuchung konnten keine nennenswerten Mengen der Verbindung im Pheromon gefunden werden, außerdem erzeugte sie bei den Insekten auch keine einschlägige Reaktion. Die tatsächlich aktive Verbindung ist vermutlich ein Terpenoid mit ähnlicher Molmasse.[5] Pentadecan kommt in geringen Mengen in mehreren Arten der Gattung Vanilla[6] vor.

Unter den organischen Verbindungen des Murchison-Meteoriten wurden Alkane der Kettenlänge 12 bis 26 gefunden, darunter auch Heptadecan als eine der Hauptkomponenten.[7]

Eigenschaften

Heptadecan ist eine klare, hochsiedende Flüssigkeit. Es ist löslich in Ethanol und Diethylether, jedoch kaum löslich in Wasser. Der Flammpunkt liegt bei 149 °C.[2]

Verwendung

Dieseltreibstoff enthält unter anderem n-Alkane, die im Allgemeinen eine Kettenlänge zwischen neun und 24 aufweisen, wozu auch Heptadecan gehört.[8] Auch andere Produkte, die aus Erdöl hergestellt werden, enthalten Heptadecan, beispielsweise Heizöl und Schmieröle auf Erdölbasis.[3]

Heptadecan wird gelegentlich als Referenzstandard in der Gaschromatographie verwendet.[2] Auch als Extraktionslösungsmittel für die Analyse ätherischer Öle wird es gelegentlich verwendet.[9]
