Hugo Toeppen

Hugo Anton Toeppen (* 8. Oktober 1853 in Udzikowo; † 26. September 1933 in Riverside, Kalifornien) war ein US-amerikanischer Ringer.

Leben

Hugo Toeppen wurde in Polen geboren. Wann er in die USA emigrierte, ist nicht bekannt. Er war Mitglied des Concordia Turnvereins St. Louis und nahm 1904 an den dortigen Olympischen Spielen teil. Toppen trat in der Weltergewichtsklasse des Freistilringens an, verlor aber bereits seinen ersten Kampf gegen Otto Roehm durch eine Schulterniederlage und schied frühzeitig aus dem Wettbewerb aus. Mit 51 Jahren war er einer der ältesten Athleten, die je im Ringen an Olympischen Spielen teilgenommen haben.

Sein Sohn Manfred war im selben Jahr ebenfalls Olympiateilnehmer. Mit der Mannschaft des Missouri Athletic Clubs gewann er die Bronzemedaille im Wasserballturnier.
