IC 53 ist eine elliptische Radiogalaxie vom Hubble-Typ E/S0 im Sternbild Fische auf der Ekliptik. Sie ist etwa 531 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Milchstraße entfernt und hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 240.000 Lichtjahren. Vom Sonnensystem aus entfernt sich die Galaxie mit einer errechneten Radialgeschwindigkeit von näherungsweise 11.800 Kilometern pro Sekunde.

Das Objekt wurde am 25. September 1890 vom US-amerikanischen Astronomen Lewis Swift entdeckt.[4]
