Sportlicher Werdegang

Der aus Sheffield stammende Sherlock gehörte nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg zu den Spieloffiziellen bei Wiederaufnahme des Spielbetriebs in der Football League und kam nach anfänglichen Einsätzen als Linienrichter spätestens ab 1947 als Hauptschiedsrichter in der First Division zum Einsatz.[1]

Sherlock wurde von der Football Association mit der Leitung des Finalspiels um den FA Cup 1957/58 betraut[2], in dem die Bolton Wanderers nach einem Doppelpack von Nat Lofthouse mit einem 2:0-Erfolg über Manchester United den vierten Pokaltitel der Vereinsgeschichte holten.[3] Dabei wurde der zweite Treffer teilweise diskutiert, da Sherlock auf Tor entschied, obwohl Lofthouse im Luftduell den gegnerischen Torhüter Harry Gregg mitsamt Ball ins Tor bugsiert hatte.[4]
