Leben und Wirken
Joe Bain studierte Wirtschaftswissenschaft an der University of California, Los Angeles und erwarb dort 1935 den Bachelorgrad. Seine Magisterprüfung legte er 1939 an der Harvard University ab und promovierte 1940 zum Ph.D. bei Joseph Schumpeter. Von 1939 bis 1975 lehrte er als Hochschullehrer an der University of California, Berkeley.
Bain gilt als Vertreter des Gesetzes der Massenproduktion, das in einem Preis-Mengen-Diagramm von sinkenden Angebotskurven ausgeht, da mit steigender Absatzmenge die Produktionskosten sinken und damit auch der Preis des abgesetzten Gutes sinkt. In der Volkswirtschaftslehre geht man aber aufgrund entgegengesetzter Gesetzmäßigkeiten, etwa dem Gesetz des sinkenden Grenzertrags, eher von steigenden Angebotskurven aus. Bain steht damit in Widerspruch zu Johann Heinrich von Thünen und seinen Nachfolgern.
