Kohima ist die Hauptstadt des indischen Bundesstaates Nagaland. Sie ist Marktstadt und hat zirka 100.000 Einwohner (Zensus 2011).

Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde der Vormarsch der Japaner und der von Subhash Chandra Bose angeführten Indian National Army in den Schlachten bei Kohima (4. April bis 22. Juni 1944) und Imphal gestoppt. Heute erinnert ein großer Kriegsfriedhof daran. Jedes Jahr im Dezember findet in der Nähe der Stadt das fünftägige Hornbill Festival statt, wo die Kultur der Nagastämme präsentiert wird und deren Tänzer auftreten.

Seit 2005 besitzt Kohima als Stadt den Status eines Municipal Council.
