Limes Arabicus Project

Das Limes Arabicus Project war ein wissenschaftliches Forschungsprojekt zur Erforschung des römischen Limes Arabicus in Jordanien.

Geschichte

Das Projekt geht auf die Forschungen von S. Thomas Parker zurück. Er beschäftigte sich seit 1975 für seine Dissertation mit dem Gebiet, 1976 führte er einer ersten Survey durch (Limes Arabicus Survey). Nach Abschluss seiner Dissertation 1979[1] fand unter seiner Leitung von 1980 bis 1989 ein umfangreiches Forschungsprojekt, das Limes Arabicus Project, mit zahlreichen Teilnehmern statt. Dabei wurden in einem Survey über 500 archäologische Stätten aufgenommen, die sich chronologisch vom Paläolithikum bis zur osmanischen Zeit erstreckten. Ausgrabungen fanden im römischen Lager von el-Lejjun und in vier kleineren Befestigungsanlagen (Khirbet el-Fityan, Qasr Abu Rukba, Rujm Beni Yasser) statt.

Gefördert wurde das Projekt vom National Endowment for the Humanities, dem American Center of Oriental Research, der North Carolina State University, dem Dumbarton Oaks Center for Byzantine Studies, der American Philosophical Society, der National Geographic Society, der Samuel H. Kress Foundation und privaten Spendern.
