Leben

Mark Kitchell wuchs in den 1960er Jahren in San Francisco auf. In den 1970er Jahren besuchte er die Filmschule der New York University. Einer seiner Mentoren war George C. Stoney. An der Filmschule drehte er den Kurzfilm The Godfather Comes to Sixth St., der für einen Student Academy Award nominiert war.[1]

Sieben Jahre arbeitete er danach in der Werbeindustrie von Hollywood, wo er als Produktionsassistent und Location-Scout arbeitete, 1984 kehrte er nach San Francisco zurück, wo er 1990 seinen wohl bekanntesten Film Berkeley in the Sixties – Die Geburt der 68er Bewegung drehte. Für diesen wurde er bei der Oscarverleihung 1991 in der Kategorie Bester Dokumentarfilm nominiert.[2][1] Er gewann außerdem den Publikumspreis auf dem Sundance Film Festival 1990 sowie den National Society of Film Critics Award in der Kategorie Bester Dokumentarfilm sowie den Kansas City Film Critics Circle Award in der gleichen Kategorie.

2008 drehte er A Fierce Green Fire, einen Dokumentarfilm über die Umweltbewegung, der 2014 auch in der Dokureihe American Masters ausgestrahlt wurde. 2017 folgte Evolution of Organic über die Ökologische Landwirtschaft.[1][3]
