Mark Vail (* 25. Februar 1955 in Hillsboro, Illinois) ist ein US-amerikanischer Autor^[1] und Musikjournalist.^[2] Er ist der Autor und Herausgeber mehrerer Standard-Werke über den Themenkomplex Synthesizer und Elektronische Musik.^[3]

Der 1955 in den USA geborene Mark Vail interessierte sich schon früh für elektronische Musik, entdeckte 1973 die Synthesizer für sich, kaufte sich 1976 einen eigenen Moog Minimoog und spielte von 1977 in verschiedenen Bands in der San Francisco Bay Area. 1983 machte er seinen Master of Fine Arts (MFA) am Mills College in Oakland (Kalifornien) in Elektronischer Musik (Electronic Music) und Aufnahmetechnik (Recording Media) und war von 1988 bis 2001 als Mitglied der Redaktion für das renommierte Keyboard-Magazin tätig. Danach arbeitete er als Lehrer, freier Autor^[4] und Musiktechnologie-Journalist unter anderem für Magazine wie Sound On Sound. Darüber hinaus führte er zahlreiche Interviews mit Pionieren der elektronischen Musik wie Wendy Carlos^[5] oder Keith Emerson.

Mark Vail verfasste mehrere Bände mit dem Themenschwerpunkt Synthesizer und Elektronische Musik.^[6] Seine Bücher Vintage Synthesizers: Groundbreaking Instruments and Pioneering Designers of Electronic Music Synthesizers, sowie The synthesizer: A comprehensive guide to understanding, programming, playing, and recording the ultimate electronic music instrument gelten als Standard-Werke in der Branche und wurden in mehreren Auflagen veröffentlicht. Die Bücher geben Einblicke in die jeweiligen musikalischen Themen und würdigen Entwickler und Ingenieure der elektronischen Musik wie z. B. Bob Moog.^[7][8]

Seit 2024 führt Vail Interviews mit Persönlichkeiten aus der Musikbranche für die NAMM Oral History.

Vail ist seit 1983 verheiratet.
