Mithrax ist eine Gattung der Krabben aus der Familie Mithracidae mit drei Arten.[1] Sie besiedeln die Gezeitenzone (intertidal) und den Schelf in einer Tiefe zwischen 1 und 65 m in der gemäßigten Klimazone des westlichen Nordatlantiks und im tropischen Atlantik.[2]

Merkmale

Der Carapax ist bis zu 63 mm lang und queroval, 1,2- bis 1,5mal breiter als lang. Die Oberfläche ist glatt oder höckerig. Der vordere Seitenrand ist mit vier seitlichen Zähnen oder Dornen bewehrt, manchmal mit einem zusätzlichen Dorn. Der hintere Seitendorn trägt ein winziges Häkchen. Das Rostrum (mittiger Stirnfortsatz) besteht aus zwei stumpfen Lappen oder Zähnen. Die Augenhöhlenränder sind hinter dem Voraugenzahn mit Höckern bewehrt. Das basale Antennenglied trägt zwei Lappen, die von oben sichtbar sind. Der erste von ihnen ist größer und reicht bis an das Rostrum. Der Innenrand des Merus des dritten Maxillipeden ist gerade und mit einer schrägen Vertiefung für die Palpe versehen. Der distale Seitenrand ist rundlich-quadratisch. Die Scherenbeine sind bei adulten Männchen so lang wie der Carapax oder länger.[2]
