Moshi moshi (jap. もしもし) ist ein vorwiegend am Telefon verwendetes Grußwort in Japan.[1] Wahrscheinlich kommt dieser Ausdruck vom Verb mōsu (申す, dt. „(etwas) erzählen, etwas sagen“).[2] Der Ausdruck mōsu wurde früher verwendet, wenn man sichergehen wollte, dass die Telefonistinnen, die damals die Telefonverbindungen herstellten, einen hören konnten[1] und sie gleichzeitig darauf vorbereiten, dass man demnächst etwas sagen würde.[3]

Zum ersten Mal wurde moshi moshi beim ersten erfolgreichen japanischen Telefonexperiment verwendet und fand danach in der Gesellschaft Verbreitung. Der Ausdruck gehört inzwischen zur japanischen Höflichkeitssprache und wird sowohl vom Angerufenen als auch vom Anrufer verwendet.[4]
