NGC 5584 ist eine Balken-Spiralgalaxie vom Hubble-Typ SBc im Sternbild Jungfrau, die etwa 72 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Milchstraße entfernt ist.

Entdeckt wurde das Objekt am 27. Juli 1881 von Edward Barnard[3].

Innerhalb der Spiralarme der Galaxie sind eine Vielzahl blauleuchtender junger Sterne zu erkennen. Neben den unzähligen Sternen dieser Galaxie befinden sich pulsierende Cepheiden und eine kürzlich entstandene Supernova vom Typ Ia, eine besondere Klasse explodierender Sterne. Astronomen nutzen Cepheiden und Supernovae vom Typ Ia als zuverlässige Entfernungsmarker, um die Expansionsrate des Universums zu messen. NGC 5584 war eine von acht Galaxien, die Astronomen untersuchten, um die Expansionsrate des Universums zu messen. In diesen Galaxien analysierten die Astronomen mehr als 600 Cepheiden, darunter 250 in NGC 5584.
