NGC 5879 ist eine Spiralgalaxie mit aktivem Galaxienkern vom Hubble-Typ Sbc im Sternbild Drache am Nordsternhimmel. Sie ist schätzungsweise 41 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Milchstraße entfernt und hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 45.000 Lichtjahren. Im selben Himmelsareal befindet sich u. a. die Galaxie IC 1099.

Das Objekt wurde am 5. Mai 1788 von dem Astronomen Wilhelm Herschel mithilfe seines 18,7-Zoll-Spiegelteleskop entdeckt und später von Johan Dreyer in seinen New General Catalogue aufgenommen.[4]
