NGC 6131 ist eine Balken-Spiralgalaxie vom Hubble-Typ SBc mit ausgedehnten Sternentstehungsgebieten im Sternbild Corona Borealis am Nordsternhimmel. Sie ist schätzungsweise 233 Millionen Lichtjahre von der Milchstraße entfernt und hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 90.000 Lichtjahren. Vom Sonnensystem aus entfernt sich die Galaxie mit einer errechneten Radialgeschwindigkeit von näherungsweise 5.100 Kilometern pro Sekunde.

Gemeinsam mit PGC 57932 (NGC 6131B) bildet sie das Galaxienpaar Holm 742.

Das Objekt wurde am 15. Juni 1882 von Édouard Stephan entdeckt.[4]
