Nicholas Franks
Nicholas Peter Franks (* 14. Oktober 1949) ist ein britischer Biophysiker. Er ist Professor für Biophysik und Anästhesie am Imperial College London und bekannt für seine grundlegenden Arbeiten zu den molekularen Wirkmechanismen von Allgemeinanästhetika.[1]
Leben und Wirken
Franks besuchte die Mill Hill School in London und studierte anschließend am King’s College London, wo er 1972 einen Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Physik erwarb. 1975 wurde er dort mit einer Arbeit über Strukturuntersuchungen von Zellmembranen zum Ph.D. promoviert.[1]
1977 begann Franks seine Tätigkeit am Imperial College London als Lecturer für Biophysik. 1989 wurde er zum Reader ernannt und 1993 zum Professor für Biophysik und Anästhesie berufen.[1] Gemeinsam mit Walter R. Lieb zeigte Franks in grundlegenden Untersuchungen, dass die Wirkung von Allgemeinanästhetika nicht durch eine unspezifische Veränderung der Membranlipide (Meyer-Overton-Korrelation) erklärt werden kann. Ihre Arbeiten führten zu einem Paradigmenwechsel hin zu der Erkenntnis, dass Anästhetika an spezifische Proteine wie Rezeptoren und Ionenkanäle binden.[2][3]
In späteren Arbeiten untersuchte Franks die Wirkung von Anästhetika auf neuronale Netzwerke und deren Zusammenhang mit Bewusstlosigkeit und Schlaf. Außerdem erforschte er die anästhesiologischen und neuroprotektiven Eigenschaften des Edelgases Xenon, z. B. dessen mögliche Anwendung bei Hirnschädigungen durch Sauerstoffmangel. Daneben lieferte er eine Erklärung für die anästhetische Wirkung von Xenon als Narkosegas.[4][5]
