Nikolaj Botew (bulgarisch Николай Ботев; * 1961 in Sofia) ist ein bulgarischer Experte auf dem Gebiet der Bevölkerungswissenschaften, der sowohl an akademischen Einrichtungen als auch für die Organisation der Vereinten Nationen tätig war.

Werdegang

Botew wurde 1961 in Sofia geboren. Seine schulische Ausbildung schloss er 1979 ab. Im Jahr 1983 absolvierte er das Hohes Wirtschaftsinstitut in Sofia. Anschließend erwarb er einen Masterabschluss (1991) sowie einen Doktortitel in Demografie (1993) an der University of Pennsylvania.

Im Laufe seiner Karriere war Nikolai Botev am Universität für National- und Weltwirtschaft in Sofia tätig. Darüber hinaus arbeitete er für die Wirtschaftskommission für Europa der Vereinten Nationen, wo er unter anderem die Bevölkerungsabteilung leitete. Später war er für den Bevölkerungsfonds der Vereinten Nationen tätig und übernahm dort die Leitung des Regionalbüros für Zentralasien. Außerdem arbeitete er für die Weltbank.

Bis zum Einmarsch in die Ukraine war Nikolai Botev Teil des Programms „Digital Professors“ der Wirtschaftshochschule[1] in Moskau. Über viele Jahre hinweg hielt er zudem Vorlesungen am International Institute on Ageing auf Malta.

Außerdem war er Mitglied der Expertengruppe „Research Agenda and New Data for an Aging World“ der National Academy of Sciences[2]. Im Jahr 2023 gehörte er zu den Fachleuten, die an der Erstellung des Berichts "State of World Population 2023" über den Zustand der Weltbevölkerung mitwirkten[3].

Wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit

Er arbeitete vor allem an den demografischen Entwicklungen in Ost- und Südosteuropa, zu den Wechselbeziehungen zwischen Bevölkerung und Entwicklung sowie zu Fragen der Bevölkerungspolitik. Seine Studien zur historischen Demografie Bulgariens und des Balkans werden häufig zitiert[4][5]. Ebenso finden seine Forschungen zu ethnisch gemischten Ehen im ehemaligen Jugoslawien[6][7][8] sowie in Russland breite wissenschaftliche Beachtung[9][10].

Er wendet die Selbstbestimmungstheorie auf das Reproduktionsverhalten an und zeigt, dass unzureichend konzipierte demografische Maßnahmen die reproduktive Motivation beeinträchtigen können[11][12].

Darüber hinaus zählt er zu den Mitbegründern des Konzepts der Demografieresilienz[13][14]. Zudem entwickelte er einen integrativen Ansatz zur langfristigen Bevölkerungsentwicklung. Dieser basiert auf der Annahme, dass die Menschheit im Laufe ihrer Geschichte vier demografische Stadien durchläuft, die durch den Ort (locus) und die Art (modus) der Kontrolle über die Bevölkerungsreproduktion definiert werden[15].

Zu diesen und anderen Themen wurde er von führenden internationalen Medien zitiert, darunter der Financial Times[16], dem New York Times[17], ORF Ö1[18] und weiteren Publikationen[19]. Seine Beiträge zu demografischen Fragen erscheinen zudem regelmäßig in bulgarischen Nachrichtenmedien[20][21][22][23][24].

Er war an den frühen Entwicklungsphasen mehrerer bedeutender Forschungsinfrastrukturprojekte beteiligt, darunter die Generations and Gender Survey (GGS)[25], die Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE)[26] sowie Datenbanken mit harmonisierten Mikrodaten aus Volkszählungen europäischer Länder[27][28].

Privates

Botew ist verheiratet. Seine Ehefrau ist die slowakische Designerin Renata Botev. Er hat zwei Söhne.
