Definition

Sei eine *-Algebra, so heißt ein Element normal, falls es mit kommutiert, also die Gleichung erfüllt.

Die Menge der normalen Elemente wird mit oder bezeichnet.

Besonders interessant ist der Fall, bei dem eine vollständige normierte *-Algebra ist, die die C*-Eigenschaft () erfüllt, eine sogenannte C*-Algebra.

Kriterien

Sei eine *-Algebra. Dann gilt:

  • Ein Element ist genau dann normal, wenn die von erzeugte *-Unteralgebra, d. h. die kleinste *-Unteralgebra, die enthält, kommutativ ist.
  • Jedes Element lässt sich eindeutig in Real- und Imaginärteil zerlegen, das heißt es existieren selbstadjungierte Elemente , sodass , wobei die imaginäre Einheit bezeichnet. Genau dann ist normal, wenn gilt, das heißt, wenn Real- und Imaginärteil kommutieren.

Eigenschaften

In *-Algebren

Sei ein normales Element einer *-Algebra . Dann gilt:

  • Das adjungierte Element ist ebenfalls normal, da für die Involution * gilt.

In C*-Algebren

Sei ein normales Element einer C*-Algebra . Dann gilt:

  • Es ist , da für normale Elemente mit der C*-Eigenschaft gilt.
  • Jedes normale Element ist ein normaloides Element, das heißt, der Spektralradius ist gerade die Norm von , also .[1] Dies folgt aus der Spektralradiusformel durch wiederholtes Anwenden der vorherigen Eigenschaft.
  • Es lässt sich ein stetiger Funktionalkalkül entwickeln, der es – vereinfacht gesagt – ermöglicht, in stetige Funktionen auf dem Spektrum von einzusetzen.
