Pitho ist eine Gattung der Krabben aus der Familie Mithracidae mit zehn Arten.[1] Sie besiedeln die Gezeitenzone (subtidal) und den Schelf in einer Tiefe zwischen 1 und 82 m in der gemäßigten Klimazone des Nordatlantiks, im tropischen Westatlantik und im tropischen Ostpazifik.[2]

Merkmale

Der Carapax ist bis zu 33 mm lang, eiförmig und so breit wie lang oder etwas länger. Die Stirn ist gestutzt und glatt oder höckerig. Der vordere Seitenrand ist mit vier bis sechs Zähnen bewehrt und geht nahtlos in den hinteren Seitenrand über. Das Rostrum (mittiger Stirnfortsatz) besteht aus zwei stumpfen Zähnen. Der Augenhöhlenrand ist unbewehrt. Das basale Antennenglied trägt distal stumpfe Zähne oder Höcker und einen inneren Unteraugenzahn. Das vierte Antennenglied ist rechteckig und schmaler als das basale. Der Innenrand des Merus des dritten Maxillipeden ist kurz, die Palpe sitzt schräg an seinem Rand.[2]

Die Gattung umfasst folgende Arten:[1]

Synonyme sind Engyzomaria Gistel, 1848, Microrynchus Desbonne in Desbonne & Schramm, 1867, Othonia Bell, 1836 und Piloronus Gistel, 1848.[1]
