Simon Ottenberg (* 6. Juni 1923 in New York City; † 1. November 2023 in Seattle) war ein US-amerikanischer Ethnologe und Hochschullehrer.^[1]

Nach dem Schulbesuch in New York City studierte Simon Ottenberg Ethnologie an der University of Wisconsin. Nach dem Bachelorexamen 1948 wechselte er an die Northwestern University und promovierte dort 1957 bei Melville J. Herskovits zum Ph.D. Unterbrochen wurde sein Studium durch einen dreijährigen Militärdienst (1943 bis 1946) im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Nach kurzer Unterrichtstätigkeit am Washington State College in Pullman wirkte er von 1955 bis 1990 als Hochschullehrer bzw. Professor für Anthropologie an der University of Washington in Seattle. Als Afrikanist beschäftigte sich Ottenberg durch Feldforschungen und seine Veröffentlichungen bis in sein hohes Alter mit der Kultur und Kunst in Westafrika, insbesondere in Nigeria. Außerdem betätigte er sich als Sammler afrikanischer Kunst; seine Sammlung ging u. a. an das Seattle Art Museum. Gastprofessuren führten ihn an die University of Ghana (1970/71) und die University of Cambridge (1987/88). Die University of Nigeria würdigte sein Wirken 1992 mit der Verleihung der Ehrendoktorwürde.
