SpiNNaker

SpiNNaker (loses Akronym für spiking neural network architecture) ist eine massiv parallele Supercomputer-Architektur der Forschungsgruppe Advanced Processor Technologies (APT) des Department of Computer Science, University of Manchester. Sie beschreibt 57.600 Rechenknoten, von denen jede mit 18 ARM9 Prozessoren (ARM968) und 128 MB mobile DDR SDRAM, insgesamt 1.036.800 CPU-Kernen und über 7 TB RAM ausgestattet ist.[1] Die Plattform basiert auf Prinzipien gepulster neuronaler Netze und kann verwendet werden, um das menschliche Gehirn zu simulieren. Hierfür wird sie als eine technische Komponente des Human Brain Project (HBP) genutzt. Im Oktober 2018 gab das HBP an, mit Modulen der ersten SpiNNaker-Generation den Meilenstein von einer Million Kerne erreicht zu haben.[2]

Im September 2019 kündigte das HBP eine Förderung in Höhe von 8 Millionen Euro an für den Bau eines SpiNNaker-Supercomputers der zweiten Generation namens SpiNNcloud an der TU Dresden zu finanzieren.[3] Das System wurde im Mai 2025 in Betrieb genommen.[4]
