Stygiolobus ist eine Gattung von Archaeen in der Familie Sulfolobaceae.[1][3][4] Typusart ist Stygiolobus azoricus.[1][4][2]

Beschreibung

Die Mitglieder der Gattung Stygiolobus, repräsentiert durch ihre Typusart S. azoricus mit Referenzstamm FC6, sind anaerobe, extrem thermoacidophile (hitze- und säureliebende) Archaeen der Ordnung Sulfolobales. Wie in der Erstbeschreibung 1991 berichtet, konnten die Isolate FC6, FC4 und RG1 bei 80 °C und einem pH-Wert von 3,0 (fast so sauer wie Essig) kultiviert werden. Die FC6-Zellen lysieren bei pH-Werten über etwa 7,5 bis 8. Für die 1991er Erstbeschreibung wurden insgesamt 11 anaerobe Proben aus kochenden Solfatarquellen, Schlamm und Böden auf der Azoren-Insel São Miguel entnommen. Die Temperatur- und pH-Bereiche vor Ort lagen zwischen 72 und 102 °C bzw. pH 2,0 und 5,5. Im Detail:[2]

Die Zellwände enthalten Muraminsäure und Meso-Diaminopimelinsäure (2,6-Diaminopimelinsäure, DAP). Der G+C-Gehalts beträgt etwa 38 mol%. Die 1991er Analysen legten eine Klassifizierung in die Familie Sulfolobaceae (Ordnung Sulfolobales) nahe. Aufgrund ihrer streng anaeroben Lebensweise, der fehlenden signifikanten DNA-Homologie mit anderen Mitgliedern der Sulfolobales und ihres G+C-Gehalts unterschieden sich die drei Stämme jedoch von den vier zuvor beschriebenen Gattungen dieser Ordnung, was Anlass für die Aufstellung der damals neuen Gattung Stygiolobus mit ihrer Typusart gab.[2]

Stygiolobus-Vertreter werden von Viren der Familie Rudiviridae parasitiert, darunter dem Stygiolobus rod-shaped virus (SRV; Spezies Azorudivirus furnasense, früher Azorudivirus SRV) mit stäbchenförmigen Virionen. SRV hat ein lineares dsDNA-Genom mit einer Länge von 28.096 bp (Basenpaaren).[11]

Etymologie

Der Gattungsname Stygiolobus setzt sich zusammen aus dem lateinischen Adjektiv stygius ‚vom Styx, ‚zum Styx gehörig‘, ‚aus der Unterwelt‘; sowie lobus ‚Lappen‘. Der Name bezeichnet also einen lappigen Organismus aus dem Hades lobe; N.L. masc. n. Stygiolobus.[1]

  • Das Art-Epitheton azoricus ist ein neulateinisches Adjektiv mit der Bedeutung ‚von den Azoren‘, ‚zu den Azoren gehörig‘, was sich auf den Ort der erstmaligen Isolation der Art bezieht.[1]
  • Das Art-Epitheton caldivivus setzt sich zusammen aus den lateinischen Adjektiven caldus ‚heiß‘ und vivus ‚lebend‘, es verweist damit auf einen in einer heißen Umgebung lebenden Organismus.[1]
