Tennyson Stephens (* 1942 oder * 1943[1] in der San Francisco Bay Area[2]; † 29. Juni 2026[1]) war ein US-amerikanischer Musiker (Piano, Gesang, Songwriting), der sich in den Genres Jazz, Funk und Soul betätigte.

Leben und Wirken

Tennyson Stephens legte 1961 eine erste Single vor, „Everybody“, erschienen auf dem Label Back Beat. Er arbeitete ab Mitte der 1960er-Jahre mit der Sängerin Rheta Hughes (Introducing an Electrifying New Star). 1969 veröffentlichte er zwei Funk-Soul-orientierte Singles, „Where Would You Be“ und „Hurry Change (If You're Coming) / Baby“/„I'm a Fool for You“, 1970–72 noch „Don't Rip Me Off!“, „Don't Let Go“/„Call Me“ und „Robinhood“/„Soul Control“, sämtlich auf dem Chicagoer Soul-Label Aries. In den 1970er-Jahren arbeitete er mit James Moody, Sonny Stitt (Soul Girl, 1973), Oscar Brown, Jr. und mit dem Gitarristen Phil Upchurch, mit dem er das gemeinsame Album Upchurch/Tennyson (Kudu) einspielte, das von Creed Taylor produziert und von Bob James arrangiert wurde. Stephens war außerdem an der Filmmusik zu Stony Island (1978) von Andrew Davis (in dem er auch als Musiker zu sehen war), Hotel of the Stars (1981) und Different Minds - Feindliche Brüder (1995) beteiligt. Ab den späten 1990er-Jahren arbeitete er in Hawaii (Jazz from Hawaii). Laut Tom Lord war er im Bereich des Jazz zwischen 1965 und 2011 an elf Aufnahmesessions beteiligt, zuletzt mit Duane Padilla (Sentimental Swing).[3]
