Upstate (wörtlich „Oberstaat“) wird in den Vereinigten Staaten, und zwar vor allem an der Ostküste, als Bezeichnung für den Teil eines Staates verwendet, der nördlich und vom Ozean entfernt liegt:
- Upstate New York, die gebräuchlichste Verwendung[1]
- Upstate South Carolina, nordwestlicher Teil des Staates South Carolina
- Upstate Maine
Eine besondere Situation herrscht in Kalifornien, wo als Upstate California nicht die sehr lange Binnenregion, sondern – ungeachtet seiner Entfernung zum Meer – der nördliche Teil bezeichnet wird.
