„Ca. Wirthbacteria“ (GTDB: c__CG2-30-54-11) ist eine ursprünglich als Phylum (Abteilung) vorgeschlagene Klasse von Bakterien. Sie wurde – wie 2017 beschrieben – erstmals in einer Stichprobe aus dem Aquifer des Kaltwassergeysirs Crystal Geyser entdeckt (Spezies „Wirthibacter wanneri“). Diese Bakterien stehen in einer basalen Position zur CPR-Gruppe (Candidate Phyla Radiation, heute Phylum Minisyncoccota – in der GTDB „Patescibacteriota“). Ihre Zugehörigkeit zu dieser Gruppe wird diskutiert.[1] In der GTDB gilt die Klasse als Mitglied,[2][3] die Taxonomien der LPSN und des NCBI führen sie als eigenständiges Phylum „Candidatus Wirthibacterota“ (bzw. veraltet „Ca. Wirthibacteria“, sic!).[4][5]
Die Withbakterien wurden durch Genomanalyse identifiziert[6][7] und konnten bisher noch nicht kultiviert werden, haben daher Kandidatenstatus (Stand 1. März 2026).[4] Sie weisen einige Merkmale wie die Mitglieder der CPR-Gruppe (Minisyncoccota) auf wie z. B. geringe Größe, fehlende Atmungsketten, reduzierter Stoffwechsel, niedrige Nukleotid- und Aminosäuresynthese usw., und stehen dieser Gruppe daher zumindest nahe.[8] Die letzten drei genannten Merkmale erschweren die Kultivierung dieser Bakterien.

Etymologie
Die Bezeichnungen der höheren Taxa beziehen sich auf die Typusgattung „Ca. Wirthibacter“, die nach Prof. Reinhold Wirth von der Universität Regensburg benannt wurde, um seine Verdienste zur Erforschung der Chemoautotrophen und das Schwimmverhalten (als Fortbewegungsmethode) dieser Prokaryoten.[4]
